Peter von Tiesenhausen
Artist's Statement, 2003
"In the alchemical furnace of plants, air is transmuted by sunlight into the stuff of stem, branch, flower. In the alchemical oven of Peter von Tiesenhausen's luminous imagination, wood is again transformed, this time into the stuff of world-old myth. Fashioned from heavy vines and cast in bronze, his boats speak of the journey of the soul towards light over oceans of mystery. His plank panels, first burnt black, then gouged to reveal flame-shapes, are icons of the inner fire that blazes, concealed, in the heart of the real. His tall, massive male figures, hacked roughly from solid timber, gaze over our heads toward the horizons of time; watchers, protectors, shrines of the gods who shelter and guide our becoming, and the world's."
