Walter May
Artist's Statement, Sept. 2003
"My working process begins with finding a material or object that I may recognize as mysterious, elegant or poetic. This beginning might follow a considerable search through mundane and common places and things, or may simply fortuitously occur as a result of observing my environment. Collected items can originate in the city or the country, from industry, nature or from the domestic. Whatever their ancestry, they will pass through the studio and eventually end up in a more distilled or amplified sculpture or installation.
"What I have come to recognize about this process is that the result comes from a dialogue between the artist and the material/object. If I cannot recognize and advance particular properties or associations of the source, then my work becomes less interesting than the object itself. If on the other hand I can successfully work with the material, then the resulting artwork can act in metaphoric or associative ways to speak about nature, our locality, the museum, or the conventions of sculpture."
